Armenia’s first Olympic Champion Armen Nazaryan honored with an Order
Armenia’s first Olympic Champion Armen Nazaryan has been honored with an Order for “Services to the Motherland.”
President Armen Sarkissian has signed a decree for awarding Greco-Roman wrestler, European, World and Olympic Champion Armen Nazaryan with an Order for first-degree Order for “Services to the Motherland” for his contribution to the field of physical education and sport.
Nazaryan is a two-time Olympic Champion (1996, 2000), a three-time World Champion (2002, 2003, 2005), and a six-time European Champion (1994, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003).
After Armenia regained independence in 1991, Nazaryan became the first Olympic gold medalist for the country. He was recognized by the FILA as the best wrestler of the year in 1998 and 2003.
In 2007, Nazaryan was inducted as a member of the FILA Hall of Fame.
Armenian athlete a runner-up in IWF Lifter of the Year competition

PanARMENIAN.Net – Armenian Simon Martirosyan is the runner-up in the International Weightlifting Federation’s Best Male Lifter competition in 2019, the IWF said in a statement.
Martirosyan set a new world record and snatched gold in the 109kg category of the World Weightlifting Championships in Thailand in September 2019.
Just like in 2017 and 2018, Georgia’s Lasha Talakhadze became the Lifter of the Year, while the Best Woman Lifter’s title went to Katherine Nye (U.S.).
More than 50 thousand, precisely 50,514, ballots were cast online on the IWF website for the five male and five female pre-selected lifters, each of them world champions in 2019.
Armenia’s Simon Martirosyan voted second best weightlifter in the world
Armenia’s Simon Martirosyan has been voted second best weightlifter in the world, according to the results of a poll on the International Weightlifting Federation’s (IWF) website.
Georgian Lasha Talkhadze became the year’s Best Male Lifter in 2019.
Talkhadze overwhelmed with his 17,084 votes, Armenian Simon Martirosyan was given 5,514 and third-placed Chinese Lyu Xiaojun earned 2,169 votes from the fans.
Simon Martirosyan is two time World Champion, and two time European Champion.
He won a silver medal at 2016 Summer Olympics, but is set to receive the Olympic gold after champion Ruslan Nurudinov of Uzbekistan tested positive on doping.
Armenia PM wants “at least 25 Olympic medals” by 2050

PanARMENIAN.Net – By 2050, Armenia must win at least 25 Olympic medals, while the national football team must become a winner of the European or World Championship, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan told a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, February 20.
Pashinyan said the government should change its perception of and attitude towards sports in general.
The Thursday meeting focused on awarding AMD 5 million (approx. $10,500) to each of the athletes recognized the best in the country in 2019.
Pashinyan said sports are of strategic importance to Armenia.
According to him, the country should also produce a World Chess Champion in the coming years.
The Prime Minister said sports victories are not only matters of social and psychological importance, but they also have an economic aspect.
Having Olympic champions increases the flow of tourists to the country, he said, while the development of sports is the best sign that the economy is developing.
Armenian athletes have won a total of 14 medals, in wrestling, weightlifting and boxing.
